Sentence Building

German main-clause word order, compressed. From Lesson 01.

The bracket

Main clause = one element in position 1, the conjugated verb in position 2, everything else in the middle, and any second verb part at the very end.

TypePos. 2EndExample
Simpleverb—Ich lerne Deutsch.
ModalmodalinfinitiveIch muss heute lernen.
Perfekthaben/seinparticipleIch habe Deutsch gelernt.
SeparablestemprefixIch stehe um 7 auf.
Subordinate—verb last…, weil ich arbeite.

Vorfeld rule

Position 1 = exactly one element. The verb stays in position 2, so the subject moves after it.

Order inside the middle (TeKaMoLo)

When several middle elements stack up, the default order is:

TemporalKausalModalLokal
wann?warum?wie?wo/wohin?
heutedeshalbmit dem Zugnach Berlin

Ich fahre heute deshalb mit dem Zug nach Berlin.

Subordinating conjunctions (verb → end)

weil · dass · wenn · ob · damit · obwohl · während · bevor · nachdem · als

Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeiten will.

Drill cue

Before speaking: pick the sentence type, drop the conjugated verb into slot 2, hold its partner for the end. One element before the verb, never two.
